What is Forging Ukraine

Trench staples are simple forged-steel anchors used to secure timber, reinforce trenches, and repair damaged field positions. They are not symbolic objects they are practical tools made to be used. When a position is hit, soldiers often need staples and a hammer before they can begin rebuilding. Demand is constant, and reliable staples can help hold shelters and trench roofs together when failure is not an option.

Our work is led by a Welsh blacksmith whose connection with Ukraine began more than eleven years ago at the International Blacksmith Festival in Ivano-Frankivsk. He later returned to Ukraine leading his own team of forge workers and volunteers.

All of our labor is volunteer-based. Experienced blacksmiths work alongside complete beginners, and we teach every volunteer what they need to know. Some forge steel, while others cut materials, sort staples, maintain tools, and keep production moving.

Strength is not always loud. Often, it is consistent: the repeated swing of a hammer, the steady work of volunteers, and another dependable staple placed into the hands of someone who needs it.
